Wildlife Calendar

With mild temperatures, virtually no rain and a low malaria risk, the dry May to October winter season is generally seen as the best time to visit Zimbabwe for game-viewing, although note that September and October are extremely hot and dry months.

The best time to travel to Victoria Falls on the other hand is at the end of the summer rainy season when the falls are in full flood – go between April and May for the most dramatic views. However, it is the August to December low water season that is regarded as the best time to go white-water rafting at Victoria Falls – the volume and speed of the water is reduced and the rapids are more exposed.

January to March

Our rainy season and summer. Expect hot, humid weather, with daytime temperatures averaging +/- 30 degrees Celsius. Rainstorms are often dramatic and short-lived.

WHERE TO VISIT

Hwange National Park, along the Ngamo Plains – which are magnificent at this time of the year and the Linkwasha Concession has great game viewing at this time of the year.

Gonarezhou National Park, The Save Valley Conservancy & Eastern Highlands are also good at this time of the year.

Victoria Falls are in good flow at this time, with good visibility.

GAME VIEWING

Many young are born which allows for unique sightings. Predators often not far behind. Everything turns green with the much needed rainfall, so scenery is spectacular. Grazing is plentiful so wildlife disperses and is less obvious to spot.

The arrival of migratory birds makes this time of year a birder’s paradise.

April

The end of rainy season, although late rains may fall in April. This generally clears up quickly though. Temperatures are getting cooler. Expect daytime temperatures to average 25 degrees Celsius, but early mornings and evenings to be significantly cooler.
