White Water Rafting

Victoria Falls is a mile long curtain of water that stretches across the glistening basalt rock, erupts into spray, and then thunders into the canyons below. The walls of basalt rock that capture the mighty Zambezi form one of the great river corridors of the world. This is the domain of the Nyaminyami, the River God of the Tonga people and is the ‘highway’ for our rafts. The rapids on the Zambezi River are officially defined as “Grade 5” by the British Canoe Union. Clients should be reasonably fit for this activity, as there is a steep walk into & out of the Batoka Gorge as well as the Rafting.

A variety of mammal, reptile and bird species visit the waterhole to quench their thirst or to sample minerals at the nearby salt-lick.

Conservation Safari

The safari starts off with the clients attending a presentation by a member of the Victoria Falls Anti-Poaching Unit. The clients are given the full background and history of the unit and are able to learn about many fascinating aspects involved in the unit’s operations, the challenges faced and the huge successes VFAPU has achieved to date. The participants on this safari are educated on the various types of poaching that take place in the region and are shown how snares that are laid to poach mammals are laid.

Following on from this, the clients are taken for a field trip into the Zambezi National Park where they are tasked to record game sightings, identify spoor, patrol and sweep for wire snares and generally visit areas to investigate for any signs of poaching. The important point is that because the clients are paying for this experience, it allows us to visit areas that are not often patrolled and the more trips that run, the more frequently we can cover these areas.

This safari effectively provides a useful presence at ground level, to deter various forms of poaching, whilst the clients get to play an important role in conservation efforts. A light breakfast, tea/coffee and mineral water will be provided during the activity.

Zambezi Fishing

Zambezi Fishing: The mighty Zambezi River has become the number one destination for avid fresh water anglers to “take on” the ferocious tiger fish (Hydrocynus Vittatus). Powerful, swift predators Tigerfish are a thrill to catch and require a great deal of fishing skill with a good river specimen weighing over 15 lbs.

Bream, or Tilapia, also live in large numbers in the river and although they don’t fight quite as aggressively as the Tiger, a good 5 lb fish will quickly snap light tackle given half the chance. Spinners and lures are the most common method of catching these fish although using light tackle, a fly and a fly-rod is becoming very popular and brings an extra dimension to a very exciting sport. Tea and coffee, soft drinks, beer and fishing tackle are provided.

This section of the river can be successfully fished through-out the year but one must change methods to ensure that catch rates remain high. There is a simple formula; if the fish can see (i.e. water clarity) then it can chase your fly, lure and bait. Clear water on the upper Zambezi is common from late May until December, this massive window of fishing opportunity has its peak from May-October for fly and lure fishermen. During the height of the rainy season bait fishing for tiger become the norm as the waters of the Zambezi River  become wide and dirty, the fish resort mainly to smell to seek out your offerings.

After interacting with the “models” guests will make their way down to the adjacent waterhole and mud wallow where under the shade of an enormous Mopane tree they will find a chair and easel – each set up with a fresh sheet of paper. Brightly coloured aprons and palettes with bright splotches of paint will also be handed out.  Soon guests’ white sheets of paper will be transformed into a canvas with a glorious blue sky, sunshine, yellow, brown or green grass and of course elephants. The Boma – Place of Eating

This is not just another ethnic restaurant, but a unique cultural experience. Excellent cuisine, including a variety of game meats and traditional Zimbabwean dishes, is accompanied by entertainment throughout your meal from traditional dancers, the Sangoma (story teller) and a local fortune teller who is available for fortune telling.

The Boma nestles in a Gusu Forest and is partly open to the spectacular African night skies. A feast of nightly entertainment incorporates Shangaan dancers and singers and a local fortune teller. Guests are welcomed with a traditional greeting in Shona and Ndebele, the local languages. They are invited to take part in a hand washing ceremony before sampling traditional beer and snacks, as a prelude to dinner.
