Hwange National Park
Hwange National Park, is Zimbabwe’s premier park and its largest with one of the highest game concentrations in Africa.
It is one of our favourites at Travel wild as it is It is only 2-3 hours from the tourism hub of Victoria Falls but its accommodation options tend to have an authentic feel. It is the perfect add-on to many a safari in Botswana or Namibia and offers a unique environment.
It hosts good numbers of large cats and is one of the last strongholds for the African Wild Dog. Huge numbers of elephant roam across the landscape and there are large numbers of game around the waterholes in the dry season. Hwange’s varied vegetation includes broadleafed woodland, acacia and grasslands. It also has over 420 bird species recorded.
Hwange is walking safari country. A walking safari with one of our renowned Zimbabwean Professional guide is a once in a lifetime experience. We have a great variety of options- suited to all budgets.
There is no natural year round water source in the park and so water is pumped into dams and pans- this means that at certain times of year, just sitting next to a water hole can be an awesome experience. There are three National Park run camps, Main, Sinamatella and Robins but these are really better for self drive and self catering clients.
There are also three or four very well run private camps (in their own concessions within the park) that offer fantastic experiences and very high standards of accommodation. Activities at these lodges include day and night drives, armed walks with professional guides and wonderful hides and platforms overlooking the waterholes.
We love the new initiative The Conservation & Wildlife Fund (CWF) funded donations from visitors to partner Hwange lodges. The fund promotes conservation and provides drought relief. Contact us for all Hwange options and consider Hwange as an add-on to Victoria Falls.
